Rodger, Thanks for a concise summary of Morgan. I also appreciate you putting it in the context of the Christian/Non-Christian justapositional situation. I do wonder what role God has in this. The question I have asked throughout Morgan and of several co-hort mates is can we trust God enough to enable a meaning to be seen that is perhaps beyond the originator of the image and the one seeing the image?

Mike - good answer. An answer would have a lot of caveats and such, but I think trusting God is the handle of the door that which we turn and enter the room...do we expect God to be present and speaking as we enter the room?...Paul you will recall in 1 Corinthians 1,2 speaks of God's wisdom revealed in Christ and the cross...and how such wisdom is spiritually discerned...by the Spirit to those who have the Spirit... I know you know this and I take your question not so much as a personal question but how does one speak to people who are schooled in a deconstructionist critique images and particularly Christian images...at the end of the day Paul's answer did not satisfy the wise or the religious of his day, nor would it today...yet as you suggest...do we trust God to reveal himself? #dmingml

Mike - a correction...first line should be 'good question'...though upon reflection I think it was a good answer as well...ie trusting God #dmingml

Is part of the concern that the average church member doesn't have the education to view and interpret for themselves? Maybe that is where my head is right now because that is so ingrained in the paternal way we have treated so many in the church. I think it also goes against our business model for making disciples.

Mike - I hear you...though I am also thinking that serving in mainline churches the quality and depth of orthodox biblical/theological formation is at best poor...at times I marvel at the sparseness of biblical literacy, and personal experience of God that many of the people I serve and teach demonstrate...and many of them have been involved in the church for many decades...and that as you suggest may be a product of our paternalistic ways [and elitist]! #dmingml

Rodger...the only approrpiate response I can think of to your comments is "AMEN!!"
